Bio

The youngest of five kids, I grew up on Long Island, NY, in a house full of books. I read tons … and eavesdropped on many adult conversations. My family loved school, sports, and travel.

My interest in history and culture kept me returning to school. In addition to an MFA in creative writing, I have master’s degrees in American studies and Arab studies. Over the years, I’ve held a number of jobs, mostly related to language. I’ve copy edited at daily newspapers, supervised college writing centers, and taught both children and adults.

In June 2015, I moved from Arlington, Virginia, to Sarasota, Florida, with my two kids–now fledging young adults. These days, I teach professional and creative writing as a full-time faculty member at Ringling College of Art and Design.

My father used to say, “Which one is the camel?”
